Winter reset
Welcome to a new year on the farm. We have been working feverishly to complete projects before we start sowing seeds and planting crops. All the fields have been cleaned up and put to bed for the winter. Cleaning up the beds entails removing all remaining crops, composting the remnants, removing all irrigation and landscape fabric, tilling in new compost, and planting a cover crop. We were slammed with other projects and couldn’t get the cover crop planted. No one is perfect.
One of the projects that consumed so much of our time was the high tunnel. Micah, his dad, and our oldest son worked so hard to build the retaining wall and frame before the end of the year. The structure is magnificent. We are waiting for a run of warmer weather to stretch the polyethylene cover so we can start growing. This new addition to the farm is full of endless possibilities all of which mean more flowers for all of you.
Winter is also a time to reset. While the garden sleeps, the farmer dreams. My dreams are of bountiful and continuous blooms, events on and off the farm, and dahlias, so many dahlias. Speaking of dahlias, I dug over 700 tubers which were then washed, divided, and are now stored in the garage. Our tuber sales will be live on January 14th at 9:00 am. We have 32 varieties available for purchase. The dahlias will ship in the spring. I cannot wait to see what you chose and watch your garden grow.
With gratitude,
Jessa
