Winter On The Farm
In 2019, I began growing my own seedlings in my garage on a makeshift table. My husband and oldest son hung lights from the ceiling and stapled a large sheet of plastic to help trap the heat from my small heater. It was primitive, but I was so happy to be growing my own seeds.
The following winter I decided to get fancy and ordered a small greenhouse off Amazon. To protect the small greenhouse from the wind and to try to maintain a warm temperature, we set it up in the garage. It was a family affair of setting up the greenhouse and hanging the lights. I cannot express just how much their support and involvement in all things gardening means to me.
I purchased a great soil mix from Urban Ag Supply, and seedling supplies from All U Need Gardening Supplies (both are located in Albany, Oregon). My seeds were sourced from Territorial, Floret, and Johnny’s. Once I started, I quickly filled my small greenhouse and ordered a second.
My two greenhouses are set up and ready to go for the upcoming season! As I spend the winter researching and planing for the upcoming growing season, the expansion of flower business may require us to build a much larger greenhouse. However, I don’t think I will ever be able to part with my small greenhouses. I have learned so much about growing from seed because of my greenhouses and I encourage anyone interested in starting plants from seed to buy one and just jump in.
